Starting Your Healing Journey: A Beginner’s Guide to EMDR Therapy

If you are considering therapy, you’ve likely heard the acronym “EMDR” buzzing around. Perhaps a friend mentioned how much it helped them, or a doctor recommended it for your anxiety or past trauma. But when you look up what it stands for—Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing—it can sound a bit more like a science experiment than a path to healing.

As an EMDRIA Approved Consultant, I’ve seen firsthand how transformative this approach can be. If you’re feeling curious but perhaps a little intimidated, let’s break down the basics of how EMDR works and why it’s so effective for new clients.

What exactly is EMDR?

Think of your brain like a natural healing system. When you cut your hand, your body works automatically to close the wound. Your mind works similarly. Usually, it processes difficult experiences and integrates them into your memory as something that "happened in the past."

However, when we experience something overwhelming—like medical trauma, birth trauma, or a sudden loss—the brain’s natural processing system can get "stuck." Instead of the memory being filed away properly, it stays "live" in your nervous system. This is why a smell, a sound, or a specific thought can make you feel like the event is happening all over again.

EMDR helps the brain "unstick" those memories so they can finally be processed and filed away.

How does it work? (The “Bilateral” Part)

The core of EMDR involves Bilateral Stimulation (BLS). This typically means following a therapist’s hand movements with your eyes, listening to alternating tones in headphones, or holding gentle vibrating tappers.

While it might look unusual, this stimulation helps keep one foot in the present moment while the other foot briefly revisits the past memory. This "dual attention" allows the brain to re-examine the trauma without becoming overwhelmed by it, eventually stripping away the intense emotional "charge" of the memory.

What should I expect? (The 8 Phases)

One of the biggest misconceptions about EMDR is that we jump straight into the trauma. In reality, EMDR is a structured, 8-phase approach:

  1. History & Planning: We identify the memories or triggers we want to address.

  2. Preparation: We spend time building your "internal toolbox." I ensure you have coping skills and "grounding" techniques to feel safe before we begin any deep work.

  3. Assessment & Processing: This is where the bilateral stimulation happens. You don’t have to describe every detail of the trauma out loud; EMDR focuses more on the sensations and beliefs attached to the memory.

  4. Integration & Closure: We ensure you feel calm and grounded at the end of every session.

Why work with an EMDRIA Approved Consultant?

EMDR is a powerful tool, and like any specialized treatment, the level of training matters. Is EMDR right for you?

You don’t need a "major" trauma to benefit from EMDR. It is highly effective for birth trauma, medical anxiety, grief, and even the "small" life events that have left you feeling stuck or not quite like yourself.
